چکیده

Doppler power spectra from a vertically pointing 94GHz cloud radar are used to retrieve the mean and turbulent components of the in-cloud vertically velocities for a continental stratocumulus cloud field. Several horizontal scales of motion in the mean velocity field are shown, including a wave-cloud feature seen in satellite photographs. A profile of vertical velocity variance is computed for both a high reflectivity and a low reflectivity regime. These profiles appear reasonable and agree well to similar statistics from an instrumented aircraft.

Cloud Radar - Initial Measurements from the 94ghz Fmcw Radar

A new solid state Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) cloud radar operating at 94GHz has been developed in the UK by the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, for the UK Met Office. This vertical-profiling cloud radar incorporates technological and operational advances over a previous demonstration instrument, which operated at 78GHz. In addition to providing independent high spatial (ord...

The Potential of a Spaceborne Cloud Radar for the Detection of Stratocumulus Clouds

The radar reflectivity and liquid water content of stratocumulus clouds have been computed from cloud droplet spectra recorded during more than 4000 km of cloud penetrations by an aircraft, and the probability of detecting various values of liquid water content as a function of the radar sensitivity threshold has been derived. The goal of the study is to specify the sensitivity required for any...

On the relationship among cloud turbulence, droplet formation and drizzle as viewed by Doppler radar, microwave radiometer and lidar

Cloud radar, microwave radiometer, and lidar remote sensing data acquired during the Atlantic Stratocumulus Transition Experiment (ASTEX) are analyzed to address the relationship between (1) drop number concentration and cloud turbulence as represented by vertical velocity and vertical velocity variance and (2) drizzle formation and cloud turbulence. Six cases, each of about 12 hours duration, ...

A study of composite cirrus morphology using data from a 94GHz radar and correlations with temperature and largescale vertical motion

In order to improve the representation of clouds in climate models, we require a better understanding of the relationship among cloud properties and the synoptic-scale state of the atmosphere. In order to investigate this issue as it pertains to a specific class of cirrus clouds, we have combined a 2 month data set of radar reflectivities observed at State College, Pennsylvania, using a W-band ...
